SURVEILLANCE
52"X98"

With this image, the artist departs entirely from the use of alphabetic symbols and constructs instead an electronically generated image that is broadcast from a spy satellite. Here the dislocation between the electronic language and its distance from what it observes is so great that all the signs of human presence have disappeared. Here is a purely electronic language reducing human culture to a schematic emblem of a city that may or may not be populated by human beings. We see an image of technology reflecting itself, engaged in a dialogue with itself and superseding entirely the human element of society. In this way we can view the title ironically, reading the image as technology narcissistically watching itself attending to its own concerns while human society struggles to adapt.
